Green Fayre 2011

Haverfordwest’s 3rd Annual Green Fayre will be taking place at the Picton Centre on Saturday June 11th from 10am to 5pm.

The day is being organised by Transition Haverfordwest and Haverfordwest Going Plastic Bag Free in partnership with HIP trust. The main aim of the day is to learn more about ‘green’ issues in a fun way!  The message at the Fayre will clearly be BUY LOCAL, RECYCLE and GROW YOUR OWN.

There will be plenty on offer for all the family, including a procession with the Samba Doc band at Castle Square at 11am and music and dancing later at the Picton Centre.

The good news is that this year many of the schools in the Haverfordwest area are participating in the Fayre, either through the flag project partly funded by the Milford Haven Port Authority and carried out by Spacetocreate, or by singing environmental songs on the day itself.

There will be lots of fun activities for children and young people – come and have a go on the bouncy castle, do some juggling, go on a wildlife scavenger hunt, or make some recycled jewellery or an outfit from recycled materials.  There will also be face painting, hair braiding and a chance to have a go at playing with the Samba band.

One way of reducing our food miles is by making more use of local businesses such as Pembrokeshire Produce Direct, fair-trade companies as well as local charities – come and sample some local produce.

You’ll be able to get lunch provided by Food in Mind as well as plenty of homemade cakes which have been made locally.  The event will be licensed so you’ll also be able to get locally made cider and real ale.

If you come along by bicycle or foot you’ll get a free raffle ticket – and if you’re bringing a bike, you can get some repair and maintenance advice too.

For the growers out there, why not bring along any excess plants or produce which you can exchange for something that didn’t work so well for you this year – our Produce Swap had some amazing offerings last year.

The Green Fayre is also a chance to find out more about why some towns have introduced local currencies – we will be using our very own Picton Pound on the day!  There will be plenty of people around who can offer advice on energy efficiency and renewable technologies in the home.

And all of this is free!

If you want more details about the day, or you would like to book a stand, please call Sally on 07766213606.

Local Green Fayre Success

The Pembrokeshire  ‘Food in Mind’ project helped Haverfordwest’s 2nd Green Fayre to be a great success – it really showed the advantages of groups working well together.  The Green Fayre was organised by Transition Haverfordwest and Haverfordwest Going Plastic Bag Free and the ‘Food in Mind’ project really put the policy of local produce into practice.  They served locally grown organic baked potatoes with a range of delicious fillings, which were sourced from within the county as far as possible.  ‘Food in Mind’ are developing links with ‘Blue Skies,’ the veggie growing arm of Frame, as well as the award winning local company ‘Pembrokeshire Produce Direct’  which supplies a huge variety of local produce directly to your door – both of these were among the organisations represented at the Green Fayre.

Scrumptious cakes on sale

The crowd was entertained by children from Wolfscastle School choir, as well as a fashion show organised by Just Nice, the clothing agency which helps you recycle unwanted outfits.

Adults and children alike made some amazing jewellery using pebbles collected from local beaches and recycled bits of spare jewellery.  People got the chance to try out the local cider and real ale, learnt how to knit or crochet and lots of people took the opportunity to sit out in the sunshine eating some of the scrumptious homemade cakes and goats milk ice-cream.
