Feedback from the February Supper Club was very good. Robbie gave a short talk about where he had sourced his ingredients. For those who weren’t there, he used fish from Claws in Johnston (they have a stall in the market but a wider selection from their shop in Johnston), Welsh butter, milk and cream from Mathias Dairy, cheese from Teifi cheese, veg from Hathways, Blaencamel and Wisebuys in Narberth, local free range chicken from TG Davies, a butcher in Newport, and also from Capestone Organics. The pumpkin in the tarte au potiron was from Blaencamel.

This month the supper club has been moved to a Saturday night (17 March) to coincide with St Patrick’s night. As well as some traditional Irish fayre we are also planning to have some Irish music and singing – so come along with well-prepared lungs for the occasion! It starts at 7.30pm at the Picton Centre.

Many thanks to Geraldine from the Narberth transition group who came to talk to us about their tree planting project. Her talk was an inspiration to everyone and the decision is to launch a fruit and nut tree project in Haverfordwest. So if you’re interested in getting involved in the project, either by helping to co-ordinate it, or sponsoring a tree, please email us.

The December Supper Club held on 16 December was enjoyed by many starting their Christmas celebrations. It was good to see so many people from the local community having fun and supporting local producers.

Geraldine from Transition Narberth has kindly agreed to come along to the first supper club of the New Year (13 January) to talk to us about the tree planting project in Narberth. We are planning to start a similar project here in Haverfordwest. The idea being is that we invite people to sponsor fruit and nut trees which are planted around our community, so in time anyone can help themselves to the fruit and nuts produced … that’ll be true local produce!

If you’re interested in getting involved in the project, either by helping to co-ordinate it, or sponsoring a tree, come along to the supper club to find out more.

Many thanks to Robbie and Freddie from Spring Gardens Catering for serving up such a mouth-watering menu. The Spanish lamb meatballs made from local lamb, and the vegetarian curry showed off local produce at its best.

They worked with one Year 5 class from each school, and split the class into two, with approximately 15 children working on one flag. The designs were generated following a discussion with the children about a specific eco theme and what it meant to them. Two flags were made in each school with the following themes:

Fenton: Traditional crafts and Caring and Sharing

Haverfordwest VC: Green Transport and Local Food

Ysgol Glan Cleddau: Reduce, Reuse Recycle and Caring Community

Mary Immaculate: Renewable Energy and Looking after nature

The children used a heat print transfer process to apply the images and text onto the flag.
Two children from each of the groups have been asked if they would like to come along and carry the flags at the beginning of the sambadoc procession in Castle Square at 11 am on the day of the Green Fayre – with all the other children invited to come along to hand out flyers to advertise the event!
The flags will then be displayed outside the Picton Centre for the day, and after the Fayre each of the schools involved will be able to use the set of eight flags for their own eco events in their school.

Many thanks to the Milford Haven Port Authority for partly funding the project and to Space to Create for undertaking it.

Haverfordwest’s 3rd Annual Green Fayre will be taking place at the Picton Centre on Saturday June 11th from 10am to 5pm.

The day is being organised by Transition Haverfordwest and Haverfordwest Going Plastic Bag Free in partnership with HIP trust. The main aim of the day is to learn more about ‘green’ issues in a fun way! The message at the Fayre will clearly be BUY LOCAL, RECYCLE and GROW YOUR OWN.

There will be plenty on offer for all the family, including a procession with the Samba Doc band at Castle Square at 11am and music and dancing later at the Picton Centre.

The good news is that this year many of the schools in the Haverfordwest area are participating in the Fayre, either through the flag project partly funded by the Milford Haven Port Authority and carried out by Spacetocreate, or by singing environmental songs on the day itself.

There will be lots of fun activities for children and young people – come and have a go on the bouncy castle, do some juggling, go on a wildlife scavenger hunt, or make some recycled jewellery or an outfit from recycled materials. There will also be face painting, hair braiding and a chance to have a go at playing with the Samba band.

One way of reducing our food miles is by making more use of local businesses such as Pembrokeshire Produce Direct, fair-trade companies as well as local charities – come and sample some local produce.

You’ll be able to get lunch provided by Food in Mind as well as plenty of homemade cakes which have been made locally. The event will be licensed so you’ll also be able to get locally made cider and real ale.

If you come along by bicycle or foot you’ll get a free raffle ticket – and if you’re bringing a bike, you can get some repair and maintenance advice too.

For the growers out there, why not bring along any excess plants or produce which you can exchange for something that didn’t work so well for you this year – our Produce Swap had some amazing offerings last year.

The Green Fayre is also a chance to find out more about why some towns have introduced local currencies – we will be using our very own Picton Pound on the day! There will be plenty of people around who can offer advice on energy efficiency and renewable technologies in the home.

And all of this is free!

If you want more details about the day, or you would like to book a stand, please call Sally on 07766213606.

The Pembrokeshire ‘Food in Mind’ project helped Haverfordwest’s 2nd Green Fayre to be a great success – it really showed the advantages of groups working well together. The Green Fayre was organised by Transition Haverfordwest and Haverfordwest Going Plastic Bag Free and the ‘Food in Mind’ project really put the policy of local produce into practice. They served locally grown organic baked potatoes with a range of delicious fillings, which were sourced from within the county as far as possible. ‘Food in Mind’ are developing links with ‘Blue Skies,’ the veggie growing arm of Frame, as well as the award winning local company ‘Pembrokeshire Produce Direct’ which supplies a huge variety of local produce directly to your door – both of these were among the organisations represented at the Green Fayre.

The crowd was entertained by children from Wolfscastle School choir, as well as a fashion show organised by Just Nice, the clothing agency which helps you recycle unwanted outfits.

Adults and children alike made some amazing jewellery using pebbles collected from local beaches and recycled bits of spare jewellery. People got the chance to try out the local cider and real ale, learnt how to knit or crochet and lots of people took the opportunity to sit out in the sunshine eating some of the scrumptious homemade cakes and goats milk ice-cream.
